This is the page to learn more about New Zealand culture by listening to Kiwis talk. Each Kiwi is passionate about something different. Alistair is passionate about scuba diving and his second video is below. This video is about scuba diving gear and in particular the boots and the wetsuit.

How to use the clips to improve your listening:

1. The clip will take a few minutes to download so read the questions. They start easy and get harder! Click the correct button on the left. Check your results - Well how did I do? - after listening. Try the first time without looking at the transcipt!
Transcript means the words that Alistair says.

2. If you are coming to New Zealand, you will need to get used to the Kiwi accent. If you are studying here, then listen to the way Alistair says fillers like umm, arhh, etc and practise repeating them.
Look at the transcript again and look at WHERE Alistair ...(pauses) to think about the best word and look for patterns in the text. This helps you with your speaking because you know WHERE to stop and make the sound noise 'um/ah' etc in a sentence and WHERE to pause in a conversation.

3. Don't look at the transcript and make notes. I hope to have documents soon showing key words, mindmaps etc!

4. Read the transcript and listen to the interview at the same time to increase your reading speed.

5. Look at the video and the transcript actions in the brackets ( ) to help you guess unknown words.

Interview with Alistair Ross about scuba diving boots and the wet suit.

Yvonne Hynson (Interviewer): Next?
Alistair:   Boots.  (Holds the left boot in his left hand)
With…(picks up a flipper) these kinds of flippers…
(puts the boot into the flipper) you’ve got to have boots.
Also keep your feet warm.
Y:   Right. 
A:   Vital for keeping your feet warm.  And..arh…yeah. (Takes the boot out of the flipper and puts it down.) Also for keeping you warm…you need…the wetsuit. (points to it)
Y:  Good colours.
A:  Yeah…yeah...arh this one…is called a …semi-dry.  Umm that doesn’t mean
it’s actually dry. (picks up right arm)  It means that…the….
(Puts arm down and picks up right leg)  all the seals 
(opens bottom of the leg to show you the seals)  around the ankles 
(puts down the leg and picks up the arm)  and wrists (opens bottom of the arm
 to show you the seals) and the neck (Turns over the suit and folds back the neck)  are quite… tight.  Not too tight but quite tight.  And the zip is…
(Starts to show you the zip and points to the flap under it) has got a nice flap
underneath it ….(Y: Mhmmm.) so water gets in…. but not much gets out. 
Y: Mhmmm.
A:  So….that means that you only heat up…one lot of water.
(Takes his hands out of the suit)
Y:  One layer?
A:  One…one lot of water.  If your wet suit doesn’t fit tightly, (Y: Mhmmm.)
water will come in and go out(Y:  Right.)….(Picks up the suit) A tight wet suit,
water will come in (puts down the suit) and stay in so you can keep 
the warm water with you.
